Lobster

This year was a great year for the California Spiny Lobster. Though the season has not ended, this is just one night!  My total by the end of Decemeber was 68 having gone out only about 1 sometimes twice a week.

Whether you know it or not, catching lobster is one of the simplest and economically approachable ways to get something to eat on your dinner table. Lobster fishing season opens during the most stressful and trying season of the year. Not only is giving lobsters as gifts a great way to spread the holiday joy but also a realistic way to receive food sur la table without feeling cheap.

Lobster was not always the food fit for the rich. Back in our early history lobster was served to the slaves because lobster was considered the Devil’s food or the most grotesque creature of the sea? Eventually, lobster quickly gained in popularity because it was mistakenly served to a King; thus accelerating the consumption of lobster and now the popular the saying, “Lobster is food fit for a King.”

Nowadays the supply and demand for lobster is billion dollar industry with prices ranging anywhere from $5.00 and ounce at the local market to anywhere upwards of $60.00 or more at a fancy restaurant. The yummy irony of course is that the rich are eating traditional slave food. With prices like that, it is no doubt a lot of you have never indulged in a lobster. Truth be known, learning how to catch them on your own can be the most affordable and most economically sound ways to put food on the table as well as help your pocket book during the holidays. All you need to do is learn how to lobster fish and what you need to be successful.

The season starts in late fall and runs until around the middle of March. When my friends and I go out, we do our best to get as many was we are allowed. The limit on how many you can catch vary depending on your location but in San Diego the limit is five traps and 7 lobsters per person with a license per day.

Lobsters stay good frozen for up to a year if wrapped, so when we make a good catch, we give a couple to our neighbors and friends, eat a couple for dinner and store the remainder. So when summer is upon us, we gloatingly eat lobsters while everyone else is eating hot dogs!

One of my most enjoyable games to play in the summer is bring out some lobster for the barbecue and see if they ask first. I always get a kick out of telling them, “it’s gonna cost you.” Of course we always share no matter what but it is interesting to know how comfortable your friends are getting with our generosity. It is worth all the rewards that ensue for a little bit of hard work and a small amount of cash.

You do not have to settle for Ramen noodles or Rice a Roni for a San Francisco treat. I am without question that during these times of economical troubles, that you do not have feel poor. However, there are things that you do have to acquire before becoming successful fishermen. You need to purchase a lobster permit, preferably some equipment which is optional, a little bit of hard labor and something to cook your catch in.
