Lobster season is over for now.

Okay lobster season in San Diego is officially closed. I must say it has been a really great year. Alone I have caught about 140 lobsters. We tried new things this season some worked some didn’t.

We rigged out bait on the hoop nets, modified the traps themselves to keep the seal out, fished different territories, different times and different baits. I have to say, at the beginning of the season we got a tip from another fisherman out at Dana Point to use dog food so… we got a can of Allpo and tried it but… I laugh as I say this…. it did not work. It did make me laugh watching a friend try and shove it in a trap. Doo, doo anyone!

What worked best for us this year but may not necessarily work better next year was fishing to rocks. We broke one prop, lost a few traps, got yelled at by military police, towed in a boat that broke its prop. We happily shared our catch with family and friends and met a lot of people this year.

Near the end of the season we fished a different location because our usual spot seemed to be fished out plus it is a lot of work fishing the rocks! The last few weeks we were pulling traps loaded with shorts and fortunately for us out of every two pulls we made loaded with shorts we were able to keep one averaging about 4 lobsters a week for the last few weeks so it was still pretty good.

So even though I am not going to tell you where we will be fishing next season… next season looks very good, very good indeed. If you live in San Diego, maybe I will see you out there. As for now, it’s back to good ole fishing. Our goal this year is to catch a big DoDo, have some good times, relax, maybe make a couple video’s and enjoy.

Don’t forget free fishing days this year are July 4th and I think Labor day (September 11th) but don’t quote me on that my memory is sorta bad sometimes.
